Biography
From 1177 until his death in 1204, Alan Fitz-Walter served as Lord Steward to William Leo, King of Scotland . Under Alan, his family acquired the island of Butte . Perhaps it was he who built the Rothsey Castle on the island. He was one of the witnesses at the signing of the royal letter to Kinloss Abbey between 1179 and 1183.
Alan accompanied King Richard the Lionheart on the Third Crusade , from which he returned to Scotland in July 1191.
Upon returning from the Crusade, Alan Fitz-Walter became the patron of the Templar Order and contributed to the expansion of the Templars in Scotland.
Marriage and children
Alan Fitz-Walter was married for the first time to Eve de Crawford , daughter of Svein Thorsson, Senor Crawford ; second marriage to Alesta de Mar , daughter of Morgan , Earl of Mar. His children (from the 2nd marriage):
- Walter Stewart (d. 1246), 3rd Lord Steward of Scotland;
- David Fitz Alan .
