According to the data for 2012, the population is 346 908 people; according to the 1996 census, it numbered 79,140 people [2] . Such a significant increase in population is due to the huge influx of refugees from neighboring states (mainly from Liberia) who flee here from civil wars. The most common language in the city is Kisi.

It is the site of the beginning of the Ebola Epidemic in West Africa 2014-2015. First sick: 2-year-old child (case S1) - fell ill in the village of Meliandu near the village of Gekedu (Gekedu Prefecture) on December 2, 2013. The child died on December 6, 2013, infecting the whole family. How the child himself became infected is not clear. Case S1 was determined much later, at the height of the epidemic, thanks to studies by European scientists in March-April 2014 [3] .
