Biography
Jacob van der Ulft was born in 1627 in Gorinchem from wealthy parents, in the family of the city mayor; devoted himself to painting because of love for this subject, but never sold his work. His drawings and paintings are very rare; he wrote quickly and easily; in the drawing, he imitated more Italian artists, and although he had not been to Italy , he painted documentary views of Rome and the ruins of ancient Roman monuments.
Van der Ulft was a good chemist : he found a way to prepare paint for painting on glass. In Gorinchem there were many of his works on glass, painted with his paints.
He was elected burgomaster of Gorinchem. Since 1679, he was hiding in The Hague due to allegations of bribery . Since 1683 he lived in Noordwijk , where he died on November 18, 1689.
