Getting

  • The effect of alkali metal carbonates on mercury (I) nitrate :
Hg2(NO3)2+Na2CO3→0oCHg2CO3↓+2NaNO3{\ displaystyle {\ mathsf {Hg_ {2} (NO_ {3}) _ {2} + Na_ {2} CO_ {3} \ {\ xrightarrow {0 ^ {o} C}} \ Hg_ {2} CO_ { 3} \ downarrow + 2NaNO_ {3}}}}

Physical Properties

Mercury carbonate (I) forms yellowish crystals.

It does not dissolve in cold water, hydrolyzes in hot. Sensitive to light.

Chemical Properties

  • Decomposes on heating:
Hg2CO3→130oCHgO+Hg+CO2↑{\ displaystyle {\ mathsf {Hg_ {2} CO_ {3} \ {\ xrightarrow {130 ^ {o} C}} \ HgO + Hg + CO_ {2} \ uparrow}}}

Toxicity

Mercury carbonate, like all mercury compounds, is very toxic.
