Personal life
Hild was born in the city of New Rochelle , New York State , in the family of a literary editor [1] . He studied at the University of Michigan , which he graduated in 1971. Hild lives in Ashland , Oregon with his wife Robin and daughter Zoe, regularly performs in performances at the Shakespeare Festival in Oregon . During the 2010 season, Hild played the role of Shylock , a wealthy Jew, in Shakespeare's Venetian merchant .

Hild worked extensively on Broadway and was twice nominated for the Tony Award for his work in the musical Anything Goes (1988) and in the play Love! Valor! Kindness! (1995) Terrence McNally .
He became known to a wide audience after playing the role of the director of the institute, Dr. Frederick Chilton in the film “ Silence of the Lambs ” (1991). In 2002, he played the same role in the logical prequel "Silence of the Lambs" - the film " Red Dragon ". After the roles played, Frederick Chilton admitted that playing the same roles on the screen is boring, and he preferred to work in the theater on the stage [2] .
