Al Mamun Crater ( lat.Almanon ) is an ancient impact crater in the mountainous southern equatorial region on the visible side of the moon . The name is given in honor of the Baghdad caliph from the dynasty of Abbasid al-Mamun (Abu l-Abbas Abd-Allah al-Mamun, 786-833), who founded the astronomical observatory in Baghdad in 829, and approved by the International Astronomical Union in 1935. The formation of the crater refers to the nectar period [1] .

Crater Description
The immediate neighbors of the crater are the Abu l'Fida Crater in the northwest; Descartes craters in the north; Tacitus crater in the east and Geber crater in the southwest. To the east of the crater is a chain of Abuul-Fida craters [2] .
Selenographic coordinates of the center of the crater , diameter 47.8 km [3] , depth 2.48 km [4] .
The crater has a polygonal shape with protrusions in the north and southwest, the crater shaft has undergone slight destruction, has a slightly terraced structure. Adjacent to the southern part of the shaft is a double pair of satellite craters - Al-Mamun A and Al-Mamun B. The inner slope of the shaft is much wider in the eastern part, which casts serrated shadows to the bottom of the crater. The shaft height above the surrounding area is 1120 m [1] , the volume of the crater is approximately 1900 km³ [1] . The bottom of the crater bowl is relatively flat, marked by several small craters. There is no central peak, in the center there are three small hills.
