The galaxy was discovered by the English astronomer John Herschel on October 9, 1828 .
This object is one of those listed in the original edition of the New General Catalog , and is also included in the Atlas of peculiar galaxies as Arp 19. The galaxy is distinguished by the fact that it has three spiral arms, unlike most other spiral galaxies with two large arms. The rotation curve and mass of the galaxy were measured in 1973. [four]
