The first settlements appeared on the island about 3 thousand years ago. The first mention of the island in written sources dates back to 1386 . The population moved to the island mainly from the islands of Saaremaa and Muhu , as well as from the territory of Lääne County . The island was also formerly inhabited by Swedes and Livs .

Population

In 2013, the island’s population was 516 people [1] , mainly Estonians. There are four settlements on the island: the villages of Lemsi, Linaküla, Rootsiküla and Syaare.

Economy

The main sectors of the economy: fishing and food industry .

The island has regular ferry and air connections to the city of Pärnu , in winter it is also possible to cross the ice.

Culture

On November 7, 2003, the UNESCO World Organization proclaimed Kihnu and part of the intangible cultural heritage of mankind for the preservation of the pre-Christian runic song tradition [2] .
