Campaign
The main struggle unfolded between the current President of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus, an independent candidate, and Rolandas Paksas, the former Prime Minister and Mayor of Vilnius . Adamkus was supported by conservatives . Paksas led a vibrant election campaign, during which he used the image of a professional pilot (in the past he was the USSR champion in aerobatics). So, on campaign trips, he flew in a helicopter, which he personally controlled, and once flew in a sports plane under an 8.5-meter bridge on the Nyaris River . According to the results of the first round of elections held on December 22, Adamkus gained more than a third of the votes, outstripping Paksas who took second place by more than 15%. Surveys of sociologists on the eve of the second round portended a landslide victory for Adamkus, but Paksas unexpectedly won. [2] During the election campaign, the new president emphasized the fight against bureaucracy and corruption, reducing unemployment and the outflow of youth caused by it, and solving the problems of depreciated deposits.
