Allmusic described Vagabonds of the Western World as “uplifting and utter courage”, and considered it to be their “first acoustically satisfying album”; “ The Rocker ” is their “first real classic”, “Little Girl in Bloom” was called “absolutely perfect”, but “The Hero and the Madman” and “Slow Blues” were rated “bloated” and “cool” respectively [3] .
Pete Pardo of Sea of Tranquility considered the album to be “filled with hot blues rock , folk and psychedelic numbers and dark, atmospheric compositions that combined rock and jazz into a new, catchy sound.” He also noted the bonuses of the deluxe edition of the album, especially the “hot” version of “Suicide” [2] .
