Defiance (1588), or Disdain, is the Royal Navy's 8-gun pinas , the first English ship named Defiance . Participated in the battles with Armada . Since the ship belongs to the XVI century , and it is not known whether it was officially on the Royal Navy lists, or was from private ships, the HMS prefix is not used in its name.

It is only known that it was the Lord Admiral’s personal pinas and that on July 31, 1588, under Plymouth, Defiance was the first to fire at the Spaniards, [1] thus sending the “admiral's call” Charles Howard. The episode was later captured in the popular series of engravings "Armada deck". Judging by the image (not entirely reliable), the Defiance had sailing armament of the ship, with direct cruis - marseille and Latin mizzen . One author calls it an 80-ton barque . [2]
Ships with a displacement of less than 100 tons were not included in the lists and probably Defiance was among them.
His further fate is unknown.
