Biography
As a lieutenant of the Argentine army [1] , at the 1924 Olympics in Paris, he won four fights, but in the final he lost to Belgian Jean Delarge and won silver in the weight category up to 67 kg [2] . The outcome of the final match was determined by the judges: Delarge was stronger in the first two rounds, but Mendez was significantly better in the third. The decision of the judges not only displeased the Argentine fans [3] , who organized the riots and tried to attack the judges [1] , but was later considered controversial [4] [5] .
At the 1928 Olympics in Amsterdam, Mendez was the team captain and carried the flag of Argentina [6] , but did not participate in fights [7] . He became the only boxer honored to carry the flag in the entire history of Argentina’s participation in the Olympic Games [6] .
He trained with Argentine champion Leon Abramoff [8] .
