Biography
Diane Shuur was born on December 10, 1953 in the city of Tacoma , and spent her childhood in a suburb of Auburn, Washington, where her father served as a police captain. At the age of two and a half years, Diane already liked to perform his favorite songs, beat the rhythm with spoons and forks [1] , and parents encouraged their daughter's creative abilities. At nine, Diane took an active part in children's concerts and vocal competitions. She later said that “she loved to hide in a closet in order to be alone with herself and sing” [2] . The idols of Diane were Dina Washington [1] and Sarah Vaughn ; in addition, she listened to the recordings of Duke Ellington , Ella Fitzgerald and Tony Bennett .
Diane's first serious performance was her concert at the Holiday Inn in Tacoma at the age of 10, then she performed country music . Studying at the Washington School for the Blind, Diane began to write songs and perform authorial material. The breakthrough came when she was 16 years old: saxophonist Stan Getz heard the song “ Amazing Grace ” performed by Diane and in 1979 invited her to the Monterey Jazz Festival. This was not the last time Diane sang in Monterey: in 1988 and 1991 she also took part in this festival.
In 1982, Goetz invited Diane to perform together in the White House , later in 1987 Nancy Reagan invited Shuur to visit the residence of the American president again, but as part of the County Basie Orchestra . The collaboration between Getz and Diane Schuur, however, did not stop, and the saxophonist accompanied Schuur for her first albums Deedles (1984), Schuur Thing (1985) and Timeless (1986) [3] .
Diane Schuur's debut album Deedles (“Deedles” was a short version of the nickname “Deedlebabe,” coined by mother Diane [4] ). During a tour of the Far East, taking part in the Tokyo festival, Shuur met BB King . The collaboration with the bluesman was the album Heart to Heart , released in May 1994 and reached the first line of American charts. 12 records of Diane Shuur got into the Billboard jazz charts [5] , and she received her first Grammy Award in 1986 for her Timeless album. The second prize came the following year thanks to a joint recording with Basie Diane Schuur & the Count Basie Orchestra [6] .
During the 1990s, Shuur actively recorded and released 8 records: In Tribute (1992), Love Songs (1993), Heart to Heart (1994), Love Walked In (1995), Blues for Schuur (1997), Music Is My Life (1999), Friends for Schuur (2000), and Swingin 'for Schuur (2001). In 2003, she released Midnight , a collection of tribute songs authored by Barry Manilow . Manilow himself, along with pianist Alan Broadbent and drummer Harvey Mason took part in the recording.
The last album by Shuur in 2011 was The Gathering - a compilation of classical country songs in jazz processing. In the creation of the plate was attended by Mark Knopfler , Alison Krauss , Vince Gill and Larry Carleton .
