He came from a well-known and wealthy family, but his father went broke. Young van der Dus was given a teaching by the then-famous painter Nikolai Moyart . At the end of the course, the 20-year-old van der Dus set off to travel. Having been in Paris , he left for Rome , but depleted all his money reserves. He was forced to enlist in the papal army and was adopted by the drummer . His compatriots, who studied in Rome, learned about the miserable fate of a fellow, formed and rescued him from the soldiers, but the nickname of the "drummer" was fixed to him forever.
Van der Dus became an excellent painter, returned to the fatherland and got married. He painted bamboo horses and landscapes , perfectly portrayed animals , especially sheep and goats. Sometimes the color of his paintings was dark and gloomy: this flaw was attributed to melancholy and sadness, stemming from poverty, family turmoil, many enemies and, above all, suspicious morals.
His son Simon (1653-1717) painted landscapes, like his father. Both of them left some good prints engraved with strong vodka.
