Biography
Since 1925, Greta Bernheim has made money as a typographer, book seller and bank clerk in Berlin. In 1928, she married the native of Prague writer Franz Karl Weisskopf , a communist and member of the Union of Proletarian Revolutionary Writers. In 1931, under the pseudonym "Alex Wedding", the first children's book Ede und Unku was published by the publishing house Malik-Verlag . In 1933, this book was burned by the Nazis who came to power, and in the same year the Weisskopfs left for Prague. There, Greta Weisskopf began to publish the monthly Neue Deutsche Blätter , edited by Oscar Maria Graf , Anna Zegers and Wiland Herzfelde. In 1939, the couple moved to Paris , and from there to New York .
In 1949 they returned to Prague, but soon in connection with Weisskopf's diplomatic service they had to move first to Washington , and from there to Stockholm . In 1950-1952, they lived in China , where Wedding worked as a translator and correspondent. Since 1953, Weisskopfs have lived in the German Democratic Republic, in the "Children's House" on Berlin's Strausbergerplatz.
In GDR, Wedding wrote books for children and youth, stories, reports and numerous articles, and also participated in the development of socialist literature for children and youth. Three of her books - Ede und Unku , Das Eismeer ruft and Das große Abenteuer des Kaspar Schmeck - were filmed.
In 1956, she was awarded the Goethe Prize of the city of Berlin.
Since 1968, the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts has been awarding the Alex Wedding Literary Prize in the field of children's and youth literature.
On January 27, 2011 in Friedrichshain on the occasion of the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Nazism, the passage Ede-und-Unku-Weg appeared, named after the heroes of the best book by Wedding.
