Coat of Arms History
Onega received the status of the city in 1780, when it became the county town of Onega county .
The coat of arms of Onega was most Highly approved by Empress Catherine II on October 2, 1780, together with other emblems of the cities of the Vologda governorate (PSZ, 1780, Law No. 15069). [2] [3]
The description of the coat of arms of Velsk read:
"A fish, called salmon , in a blue field. A sign that during this city the best of this kind, fish are caught abundantly, and they make quite a noble bargain. In the upper part of the shield is the Vologda Coat of Arms :" In the red shield there is a hand emerging from the cloud holding a golden power with a silver sword. "
Some historians argue that the appearance of the Onega coat of arms should be attributed to the XVI century [4] , but there is no exact confirmation of this.
In some heraldic publications, as well as the works of local historians and historians, the Onega coat of arms project with the Arkhangelsk coat of arms in the upper part is found. However, there is also no official confirmation of the approval of the Onega coat of arms in this form.

In 1859, during the Köhne heraldic reform, a project of Onega's new coat of arms was developed: “There is a golden salmon in the azure shield. In the free part - the coat of arms of Arkhangelsk. Behind the shield, hammers laid crosswise connected by the Alexander ribbon ”(not officially approved).
On October 15, 1998, the deputies of the city assembly decided to abandon the upper part of the city’s emblem and approved the now existing version of the coat of arms - a golden salmon in a blue field.
In 2006, the city settlement Onega was formed. Decisions on the emblem of the urban settlement were not made.
On February 18, 2010, at the 7th session of the fourth convocation of the Assembly of Deputies of the Onega Municipal District municipality, the coat of arms of the Onega District was approved. The basis of the coat of arms of the region was the historical coat of arms of Onega in 1780.
