FC Newton Heat (Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway) in the 1886/1887 season
The 1886/87 season was the first season for the Newton Heat (Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway) football club in which the club took part in a nationwide tournament, the FA Cup . Before that, the club played only in regional tournaments, the LancashireCup and the Manchester Cup[1] .

In the 1886/87 season, Newton Heat first played in the FA Cup . The rival " pagans " in the first round was the Fleetwood Rangers club. The match ended in a draw with the score 2: 2, both goals for “Newton Heat” were scored by Jack Doughty[2] . After 90 minutes of the match, the chief referee set an extra time , but Newton Heat captain Jack Powell refused to play, insisting on a replay appointment. Fleetwood complained to the Football Association , which awarded the Gentiles a technical defeat for refusing to comply with the requirements of the judge. After that, “Newton Heat” in disagreement with the decision of the Football Association decided to boycott the FA Cup, which lasted until 1889 [1] .

Manchester Cup and surroundings
“Newton Heat” took part in the Manchester Cup and the surrounding area in the rank of the current title holder. In the three initial rounds, the “ pagans ” won with a big score: “Huli Hill” was defeated with a score of 7: 0, “Gorton” was defeated 11: 0, and “Gorton Villa” lost with a score of 8: 0.
In the semifinals, “Newton Heat” for the first time in its history of participation in the Manchester Cup played away. The rival of the "pagans" was the Ten Eykrs club. Thanks to the goal of Roger Doughty , Newton Heat celebrated the victory with a minimum score and reached the final. The rival in the finals was West Manchester, which won 2-1 [1] .
