Biography
Alexander Gorelov was born on March 27, 1923 in the village of Baranovka [1] (now the Nikolaev district of the Ulyanovsk region ) into a working family.
He received an incomplete secondary education, worked as an accountant.
In April 1942, Gorelov was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. In 1943 he graduated from the Turkestan machine gun school. Since May of that year - on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. By April 1945, Captain Alexander Gorelov commanded a battalion of the 120th Guards Rifle Regiment of the 39th Guards Rifle Division of the 8th Guards Army of the 1st Belorussian Front . He distinguished himself during the assault on Berlin [2] .
On April 22, 1945, the battalion with battles reached the Spree River and struck at enemy positions from the rear, capturing three bridges. In total, during the battles for Berlin, the battalion captured more than 2,000 soldiers and officers of the enemy, released from two camps of prisoners of war of the allied forces [2] .
By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of May 15, 1946, Captain Alexander Gorelov was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal [2] .
In 1945, with the rank of Major, Gorelov was transferred to the reserve. He lived and worked in the village of Kolkhozabad, Kurgan-Tyube region of the Tajik SSR .
He died in 1953 [2] .
