After the commissioning of the first transcontinental railway in 1869, San Francisco was separated from this important infrastructure by the bay. Since 1870, due to fears of a decrease in the role of the city due to difficult access to the railway infrastructure, they began to discuss the design of a bridge that would cross the bay. After the calculations, it became clear that the best option would be to build a bridge that will pass through the island of Yerba Buena . The problem was that at that time the US Navy base was located on the island. Thus, to start work, it was necessary the permission of the US Congress , which was obtained in 1931.
Construction began on July 9, 1933 [5] . To connect the two sections of the bridge under the island of Yerba Buena, a tunnel 23 meters wide had to be dug.
The opening took place on November 12, 1936 after three years of work and investment of $ 70 million [6] [7] . The ceremony was attended by former President Herbert Hoover and the Governor of California [8] .
