History

284 sd was formed at the end of July 1941 in the Kharkov military district in Romny [1] . Already on August 3, according to the directive of S. Budenny , commander-in-chief of the troops of the South-Western direction, she was included in the Kiev group, which was to strike at Vasilkov and the White Church with the aim of destroying the enemy acting at the junction of the South-Western and Southern fronts [2] .

On the evening of August 8, two echelons of 284 sd arrived at the front. Her arrival allowed a counterattack on August 11 near the village of Myshelovka . On August 12, the division was located west of Pirogovo , one of its regiments was in reserve in the area of Sovki [3] . On August 14, the 37th Army , which included 284 sd, unsuccessfully tried to advance in the direction of Khotov in order to restore the front edge of the Kiev fortified area on the southern front. By the evening of this day, units of the division occupied positions in the region of Teofania - Pirogovo - Vita-Litovskaya [4] . By August 15, Soviet counterattacks, in which 284 sd took part, had quieted down, still not reaching their goal: to push the enemy beyond the front line of the Kiev fortified area . After an unsuccessful assault on KiUR, the Germans gained a foothold at the line that they determined for themselves [5] .

Subsequently, the division waged positional battles here until mid-September. In particular, in the morning of August 30, a German assault group from the 278th infantry regiment of the 95th infantry division with a force of up to two platoons carried out reconnaissance in battle on Zhukovy Island and captured 164 Red Army soldiers from the 1047th regiment, who had little resistance and actually surrendered without a fight. This episode was presented by the operative report of the headquarters of the 37th Army as a successful reflection of an enemy strike, which was not true. And on September 3, the sappers of the 1047th Infantry Regiment, having secretly dug an underground mine for several days, blew up 3 German bunkers at one of the high-rises near the village of Pirogovo . Then, almost without a fight, the Soviet infantry captured the skyscraper. By the end of August, the loss of personnel in the rifle companies of the division reached about 50%, largely due to frequent cases of transition to the enemy, desertion and poorly prepared assault actions of the infantry. Because of this, for example, in 1045 JV (commander Colonel S. Kalinin) in early September there were cases of decimation , that is, executions of Red Army soldiers who did not prevent the passage of their deserter comrades to the enemy [5] .

On September 14, the Germans closed the ring around Kiev , forming the Kiev boiler . In the course of further hostilities, the 37th Army was divided into several parts. On September 19, by order of the command, the division, being in the rearguard of the 37th army, retreats from Kiev [6] . As a result of the retreat, from September 19 to 29, 284 sd was at Berezani and Yagotin , where it was destroyed. The commander of the 1043 joint venture Major V. Popkov, the commander of the 1045 joint venture Colonel S. Kalinin and the commander of the 820 ap major G. G. Semin were captured by the Germans. The commander of the 284th unit, Colonel G.P. Pankov, left the encirclement on October 8, 1941, in the area of the village of Terny south of the railway station [7] .

On December 27, 1941, the division was disbanded as dead.
