Julio Caro Baroja ( Spanish: Julio Caro Baroja ; November 13, 1914 , Madrid - August 18, 1995 , Vera de Bidasoa , Navarra ) - a prominent Spanish historian , anthropologist , linguist and folklorist .

Biography

Father is a Madrid publisher, mother is a writer and ethnologist, sister of Pio Baroja . In childhood, he spent a lot of time with his uncle in Vera de Bidasoa. He began his studies at the University of Madrid, but she was interrupted by a civil war . At the end of the war, he defended with honors at the University of Madrid a doctoral dissertation on ancient history ( 1941 ), and taught for a short time in it. He headed the Museum of the Spanish people in Madrid ( 1942 - 1953 ). In the early 1950s, he worked on a grant in the United States and Great Britain; in 1952-1957 he headed an ethnographic mission in Spanish Sahara . He traveled a lot around Spain and around the world. In 1983 - 1995 he directed the International Journal of Basque Studies ( Spanish Revista Internacional de los Estudios Vascos ).

Member of the Royal Academy of Spanish , the Royal Academy of the Basque Language , the Royal Academy of History. Laureate of the Prince of Asturias Prize in Social Sciences ( 1983 ), Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts ( 1984 ), Menendez-i-Pelayo International Prize ( 1989 ), National Literary Prize, etc. The name of the historian named the square in San Sebastian , schools and other educational institutions in several cities in Spain.
