Biography
Petr Gordienko was born on June 15, 1923 in the village of Lozovka (now the Poltava district of the Poltava region of Ukraine ) into a peasant family. In 1937, he graduated from an incomplete secondary school in the village of Valok , after which he worked on a collective farm . In August 1941, Gordienko was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army and sent to the front of the Great Patriotic War. He took part in the battles on the Western , Bryansk , Central and 1st Belorussian fronts, was wounded and shell-shocked. By January 1945, Sergeant Pyotr Gordienko commanded the communications department of the headquarters battery of the 969th Artillery Regiment of the 60th Rifle Division of the 47th Army of the 1st Belorussian Front. Distinguished during the liberation of Poland [1] .
On January 16, 1945, Gordienko with a group of fighters crossed the Vistula River 10 kilometers northwest of Warsaw and laid a communication line on the other side, which made it possible to ensure the success of adjusting regimental artillery. Repeatedly eliminated damage to the line, while advancing on brittle ice, risking failure. In just one day, he repaired 15 damage to the line [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of March 24, 1945, for “exemplary execution of the combat missions of the command and the courage and heroism shown at the same time”, Sergeant Pyotr Gordienko was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal number 6432 [1 ] .
After the war, Gordienko was demobilized. He worked as the chairman of a collective farm in the village of Ordanovka, Dikansky district, Poltava region of the Ukrainian SSR, then returned to his native village, where he worked as an agronomist. He died in June 1965, was buried in the village of Chernoglazovka, Poltava region [1] .
He was also awarded a number of medals [1] .
