Douglas Garven Alexander ( born Douglas Garven Alexander ; born October 26, 1967 , Glasgow ) is a British Labor politician and UK Secretary for International Development since 2007. Former Secretary of Transportation and Minister for Scotland (2006-2007). He began his political career as an adviser to Gordon Brown , was first elected to parliament in 1997, and since 2001 has held various posts in the government.

Biography

Douglas Garven Alexander was born in Glasgow on October 26, 1967. [1] [2] [3] He grew up in Bishopton , where his father was a clergyman [2] [3] . He studied at Bishopton Elementary School and Park Maynes High School in Erskine [2] [1] [3] . At the age of 14 he joined the Labor Party [2] .

In 1984 he won a scholarship for two years of study at the International College named after Lester Pearson in Vancouver ( Canada ) [1] [2] [3] . He received an international bachelor's degree [2] [3] . Returning to Scotland , he studied political science and modern history at the University of Edinburgh [2] [1] [3] . He was chairman of the University Labor Club, held various positions in the district branch of the Labor Party [2] [3] .

In 1988, he won a one-year scholarship at the University of Pennsylvania [2] [1] [3] . During his stay in the United States, he participated in the presidential election campaign of Michael Dukakis (Michael Dukakis), and also worked in the office of one of the senator-democrats [2] [3] . He completed his studies with honors, received a master’s degree [2] [3] and from 1990 to 1991 he worked as an adviser and speechwriter to Member of Parliament of Great Britain Gordon Brown [2] [1] [3] .

Then he returned to Scotland, where he underwent legal training. In 1993, he graduated from a distance law course at the University of Edinburgh , where he received a bachelor's degree in law. In 1994 he was certified as a lawyer [2] . From 1994 to 1996, he was an attorney at Brodies WS, and from 1996 to 1997 at Digby Brown [1] . In 1995, he ran for additional parliamentary elections from the districts of Perth and Kinross , but was defeated [3] .

In 1997, he was elected to Parliament from South Paisley County in Scotland [1] [3] [3] . Since 1999, Alexander has been the chairman of the Labor Party campaign planning group [1] . For success in conducting the election campaign in 2001, he received a post in the government [1] . In June 2001, he was appointed Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry and was responsible for Internet commerce [2] [1] [3] [3] .

In May 2002, Alexander was appointed junior minister in the cabinet secretariat, responsible for the work of the Strategic Department, the Central Information Office and the Office of Civil Servants [2] [1] [3] . On May 5, 2006, he served as Minister of Transport and Minister for Scotland [2] [3] . In August 2006, he publicly confirmed information about the discovery of a terrorist conspiracy in the UK and announced the cancellation of flights due to the threat of terrorist attacks [4] [5] .

On June 27, 2007, Gordon Brown succeeded Tony Blair at the head of the British government [6] [7] [8] and appointed Alexander to the post of Minister of International Development [9] .

In 2012, Alexander was at the center of the scandal, announcing in an interview with Evening Standard that his party member Ken Livingstone “deservedly” lost the mayoral election in London. In response, Livingston noted that the shadow foreign secretary presents "the failed New Labor project, which cost millions of votes to lose."

In 2015, he sensationally lost the election to 20-year-old student Mhery Black , who ran for the Scottish National Party , and could not get into parliament. [ten]
