Later he graduated with honors from the University of Stirling with a degree in history. Then he received his doctorate in economic history [1] [2] [3] [4] . Political career began in the Communist Party of Great Britain [3] .
From 1979 to 1983 he was engaged in research work in the Labor Party. From 1983 to 1985, he served as political advisor to party leader Neil Kinnock [2] [3] . From 1986 to 1987, he led the Scottish trade union movement in support of Labor [2] . In 1987, he was first elected to parliament [3] . He occupied posts in the shadow office of Laborites: the representative for children, the shadow minister of defense [2] . In 1994, he was one of the most influential Scottish Laborists who supported Tony Blair’s candidacy for party leadership. [3]
In 1997, after the victory of the Labor Party in the general election , he became junior minister of the armed forces [1] [3] [4] , and then deputy minister of transport [2] . Reed was considered a figure close to the prime minister [3] [5] , and the most likely alternative to Gordon Brown that could be offered by Blair’s supporters [4] . However, some observers believed that Reed was rather not a leader, but rather an “apparatchik” [3] .
After a reshuffle in May 2006, he replaced Charles Clarke as Minister of the Interior [2] [4] [4] [6] [7] . Under the leadership of Reed, the ministry devoted its main efforts to its police and penitentiary functions, combating illegal migration and terrorism [2] [5] .
In August 2006, Reed was chairman of the emergency committee to investigate the plot of terrorists who planned to explode passenger aircraft [4] [5] [8] [9] .
On June 27, 2007, Gordon Brown replaced Blair as Prime Minister [10] [11] [12] , and Reed was dismissed [13] .
