Biography
Mark Wells White was born in Henderson , Rask County, Texas . In 1962, he graduated from Baylor University with a diploma in business administration, and in 1962 from the law department of the same university, after which he worked for four years at the law firm Reynolds, Allen & Cook in Houston . White also served in the Texas National Guard's 36th Infantry Division.
In 1966, White was appointed assistant state attorney general, and in 1973, Texas secretary to Governor Dolph Briscoe . In 1977, he was elected president of the National Association of Secretaries. In 1979, White was elected state attorney general; he held this position until 1983. White also co-chaired the Law Enforcement Coordinating Committee and was a member of the Governor's Organized Crime Prevention Council. In 1981, he was elected chairman of the Southern Conference of Attorney Generals.
In 1982, White was elected Governor of Texas and was sworn in on January 18, 1983. As governor, he was a member of the Southern Southern Regional Council for Education, the Interstate Petroleum Coordinating Commission, and the Association of Governors of the Frontier States. His administration focused on educational reform and state economic development.
After retiring on January 20, 1987, White worked at Keck, Mahin & Cate Law Firm. In 1990, he again tried to run for governor, but lost to the primaries Ann Richards . Subsequently, White served as chairman of the Houston Independent School District Foundation, a nonprofit organization that supports public schools, and as president of GeoVox Security, Inc.
