Biography
Yuri Gorbushko was born on October 30, 1912 in the city of Akhtyrka (now the Sumy region of Ukraine ) in a peasant family. In 1929 he moved to Kharkov , where he graduated from a road technical school and worked at one of the local factories. Later he moved to Moscow , where he worked as a driver. In 1941, Gorbushko was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. Since the beginning of World War II - on its fronts, he initially headed the convoy for the transportation of ammunition on the Mozhaisk- Moscow highway. Since May 1942, he directly participated in battles with German troops. He took part in the battles on the Western , Bryansk , Central , Stalingrad , 1st , 2nd Ukrainian, 1st Belorussian fronts. He was wounded three times in battles. By January 1945, the foreman, Yuri Gorbushko, was the driver of the T-34 tank, 2nd tank battalion of the 48th guards tank brigade, ( 12th guards tank corps , 2nd guards tank army , 1st Belorussian front) . Distinguished during the liberation of Poland [1] .
During the offensive from January 15 to February 3, 1945, Gorbushko and his crew traveled 250 kilometers. To the east, the city of Schneidemühl (now Pyla , Poland), the crew destroyed three enemy anti-tank guns and more than a platoon of enemy soldiers and officers. On February 3, 1945, the crew repulsed four German counterattacks, destroying 2 tanks , an assault gun and a large number of enemy soldiers and officers, south-west of the city of Deutsch-Krone (now Walcz , Poland). Yuri Gorbushko was wounded in that battle and died from his wounds on February 5, 1945 [1] .
Rewards
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of March 24, 1945, for the "exemplary performance of command missions at the front of the struggle against the German invaders and the courage and heroism shown" of the Guard, foreman Yuri Gorbushko was posthumously awarded the high rank of Hero of the Soviet Union . He was also awarded the Order of Lenin , two orders of the Red Star and a medal for the defense of Stalingrad [1] .
Memory
A street in Akhtyrka was named in honor of Gorbushko and his bust was installed on the Heroes Avenue [1] .
