Biography

Harry Mason Reid (Harry Mason Reid) was born December 2, 1939 in the small mining town of Searchlayt in Nevada . His father was a miner, and his mother moonlighted as a washerwoman. There was no high school in Serchlite, and Reid went to study in the neighboring city of Henderson . At school, he met his future wife Landra Gould. Currently, they have five children and sixteen grandchildren [4] [5] [6] .

One of Henderson’s entrepreneurs gave Reid a subsidy for higher education. In 1961, Reid graduated from the University of Utah , and then, in 1964, George Washington University Law School. In his student years (from 1961 to 1964) he worked in the police department of the US Congress [4] [5] [6] .

After graduation, Reid, who had already managed to become a member of the Nevada Bar Association, returned to Henderson, where he received the post of city prosecutor, who held until 1966. In 1968, he won the state legislature. He spoke with the first air pollution bill in state history and also worked on consumer protection legislation [4] [5] [6] .

In 1970, he ran for governor’s elections in tandem with Mike O'Callaghan, became the youngest vice-governor in the history of Nevada and held this post until 1974. From 1977 to 1981, he chaired the State Gambling Commission [4] [5] [6] .

In 1982, Reed was elected to the US House of Representatives , and in 1986 to the Senate. He gained a reputation as a constructive politician; his merits were recognized not only by the Democrats, but also by prominent republican senators. In 1999, Reed was elected deputy leader of the Democrats and party organizer in the Senate. On his account, legislative acts in the field of education, health care and taxation, as well as environmental protection [4] [5] [6] .

In 2005, after the start of his fourth Senate term, Reed was unanimously elected Democratic leader in the Senate [4] [5] . Known earlier as a supporter of compromises, he took a tough stance against the administration of George W. Bush regarding the " Plame " [7] [8] and the Iraq war [9] [10] . In September 2006, Reid demanded the resignation of Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld [11] [12] .

On November 7, 2006, midterm elections were held in the United States, which resulted in the Democratic Party [13] [14] gaining control of both houses of Congress, and on November 8, Bush officially announced Rumsfeld’s resignation [13] [15] . Reed explained the defeat of the Republicans by the fact that the Americans "are tired of the failures of the last six years" [14] . Apparently, the Democrats led by Reed in the Senate of the new convocation will constitute stiff opposition to the Bush administration on the Iraqi issue [16] . On November 14, 2006, Reid was elected to the post of leader of the Senate majority [17] .

On March 20, 2014, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation published a list of sanctions against US representatives in response to sanctions against a number of Russian officials in response to the accession of Crimea to the Russian Federation . The list includes nine US citizens, including Harry Reid [18] . He is denied entry to the territory of the Russian Federation [19] .

The Reed spouses have five children and sixteen grandchildren [4] [6] .
