Biography
I bowed to O'Toole. I remember the first time we went with him to the bar. He said: “Take the Guinness.” How are you, dear? Okay, let's have a drink and go after our Oscars. I am fascinated by this kind of madness, admire drunks and slobs. And I used to be like that. A few years ago, I saw O'Toole again, and he said: "They say you already have a halo around your head - not like we sinners." When you stop drinking, you lose some of your friends. - Anthony Hopkins [1] . |
He studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art , worked in Bristol . In the sixties, the blue-eyed stately blond O'Toole gained fame in the role of a romantic hero. The world-wide fame was brought to him by playing the role of Lawrence of Arabia in the British film of the same name (1962), the widest popularity was the partnership with Audrey Hepburn in the elegant comedy " How to Steal a Million " (1966). Twice nominated for an Oscar for the role of the English King Henry II (Beckett 1964, Lion in Winter 1968). Among the notable roles of the 1970s is the role of Tiberius in the drama Caligula ( 1979 ).
In the 1970s, he struggled with alcoholism , was on the verge of death after removal of the pancreas and a significant part of the stomach , but overcame the disease.
In 1989, he played with great success the title character [2] in British productions of Keith Waterhouse 's play Jeffrey Bernard Unwell (he played this "crown role" in various theaters until 1999 ) [3] [4] .
Bernardo Bertolucci ( 1987 ) returned to The Big Cinema.
Until 1999, he continued to play leading roles in various theaters in the UK, Ireland and the USA. Notable recent films include Priam ( Troy , 2004), Casanova (TV series Casanova , 2005). For the role of a cancer-dying veteran of the theater scene Maurice in the tragicomedy Venus (2006), he was presented to the Oscars for the last time in his life.
O'Toole is known as a chronic Oscar Award loser: he was nominated eight times in the Best Actor category, but never won. O'Toole lost the victory to such famous actors as Gregory Peck , Marlon Brando , Robert De Niro and others.
When the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences finally awarded him an honorary prize for his contribution to the development of cinema in 2003 , he initially refused to accept the award, but ultimately changed his mind and appeared at the ceremony.
On July 9, 2012, 79-year-old Peter O'Toole announced the end of his film career. The text of the official statement published by the secretary of the actor reads [5] :
| Interest in this left me and my heart; she will not return. My career brought me universal support, emotional fulfillment and significant comfort. She brought me together with many wonderful people, good comrades, with whom I shared the inescapable fate of many actors: ups and downs. Nevertheless, I believe that everyone should decide for himself when to go aside. |
A year and a half later, on December 14, 2013 , 81-year-old O'Toole died at in London , where he was taken two days earlier, after a serious and prolonged illness [6] . Condolences on the death of O'Toole were one of the first to express the President of Ireland , a close friend of actor Michael Higgins [7] .
Farewell to the actor and cremation were held at the Golders Green crematorium [8] . The ashes were scattered at home in Ireland [9]
