Yale University
According to Stirling’s will, all money received from the sale of his property should be transferred to Yale , for the construction of “at least one durable, useful and architecturally beautiful building, in which his love for his alma mater will be embodied” and the creation of a personalized professorship in the University.
As a result, the university received about $ 18 million (the equivalent for 2011 is more than $ 200 million). At that time, it was the largest amount ever donated to a higher education institution. With these funds, several buildings were built at Yale University (the Stirling Memorial Library building, the Yale School of Law , the postgraduate department building, one of the buildings of the Yale Medical School) and a large personal professorship was established (27 permanent professorships).
Stirling Memorial Library Building
The building was originally designed by architect Bertram Goodhue (died in 1924), after his death - by James Rogers. The library building is made in the image of a Gothic cathedral. Glass stained-glass windows were made by artist Owen Bonavela. Construction work was completed in 1931. The library has 8 floors and 15 levels (with its own category of books).
For unobstructed visibility of the library from the street (College Street), Berkeley College of Yale University underwent reconstruction, as a result of which the college territory was reduced and divided into two parts.
In 1971, an underground tunnel was laid between the Stirling Memorial Library and the Bass Library .
The library is featured in the movie Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008), although the action in the film takes place at Harvard University .
