Biography
Dmitry Gorbunov was born on October 24, 1924 in the village of Bishevo (now the Apastovsky District of Tatarstan ) into a peasant family. He graduated from an incomplete secondary school, worked at the collective farm at the same time, later moved to Kazan , where he graduated from a factory apprenticeship school , worked as a mechanic at a military factory. In June 1942, he was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army and sent to the front of the Great Patriotic War. By June 1944, Senior Sergeant Dmitry Gorbunov commanded a platoon of the 136th Rifle Regiment of the 97th Rifle Division of the 5th Army of the 3rd Belorussian Front . Distinguished during the liberation of the Belarusian and Lithuanian SSR [1] .
With his platoon, Gorbunov took an active part in crossing and seizing bridgeheads on the rivers Sukhodrovka , Berezina and Oshmyanka . In the battles for Vilnius, he hoisted a red flag in one of the buildings in the city center. July 28, 1944 Gorbunov died in battle on the outskirts of Kaunas . He was buried in Kaunas at the military cemetery [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of March 24, 1945, for the "exemplary execution of the combat missions of command on the front of the fight against the German invaders and the courage and heroism shown at the same time", senior sergeant Dmitry Gorbunov was posthumously awarded the high rank of Hero of the Soviet Union . He was also awarded the Orders of Lenin , the Red Banner and a medal [1] .
A monument to Gorbunov was erected in Bishevo and a street was named after him [1] .
