Andrew (André) Viktorovich Chelishchev ( fr. André Tchelistcheff ) is an American winemaker ( oenologist ) from the Russian noble family of the Chelishchevs . One of the founders of California winemaking [2] .

Biography
Born December 7, 1901 in Moscow in the family of Kaluga landowner. His father, Viktor Nikolaevich (1870-1952), a professor of law, in the pre-revolutionary years gained fame for his public activities [3] ; mother - Alexandra Nikolaevna Yasinskaya. Until 1911, Chelishchev was brought up at home. Then he studied at the Junker School [1] in Kiev , but was forced to interrupt his studies due to the 1917 revolution.
In 1918-1920, Chelishchev took part in the Russian Civil War on the side of the White movement . In 1920 he was seriously wounded in the Crimea , left Russia in the ranks of the Russian Army Wrangel . It turned out in the Gallipoli camp . In emigration to Turkey , then he moved to the family in the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes [4] .
He studied agriculture at the university in the Czechoslovak city of Brno (“ Russian action ”), from 1930 continued his education in France - at the Pasteur Institute and the National Institute of Agricultural Chemistry, where he studied microbiology and winemaking aspects. He worked for some time in Champagne at Moët & Chandon [4] .
In 1938, Chelischeva was invited to work in the US at the California farm Beaulieu - it was engaged in the production of communion wine and was under the auspices of the Catholic community of San Francisco . From that moment on, he moved to America forever [5] .
In a short period of work on the west coast of the United States turned the unremarkable local wine into the world-famous California Cabernet [2] .
He died on April 5, 1994 in Napa , the capital of American winemaking, where he erected a monument. Son Dmitry works as a winemaker in the state of Nevada [4] . Grand-nephew Mark Chelishchev shot a documentary about Andrei Viktorovich “Andrei. The voice of wine. [6]
Awards
During his life, Andrei Chelishchev received a number of professional awards:
- For Outstanding Merits in Winemaking (1986);
- Man of the Year in the industry from the Symposium of Wine Producers (1990);
- The Reader's Choice Prize from the magazine Wine Spectator (2000).
In March 2007, the name of Andrei Chelischev was included in the Culinary Hall of America's Glory [7] .
There is also an award named after Andrei Chelischev "For his contribution to the promotion and popularization of wine-making products in Russia", which is awarded at the International Professional Competition of Wines and Spirits held in Moscow. [eight]
