It is formed by the confluence of the Des Plaines and Kankakee rivers, 72 km south-west of the city of Chicago . It flows along the Central Plains , flows into the Mississippi River near the city of Grafton .
The length is 432 km (676 km from the source of the Kankaki River). The basin area is 71 thousand km².
