Chernikov, Valentin Mikhailovich

Valentin Mikhailovich Chernikov ( April 1, 1937 , Yerevan [Comm. 1] - January 5, 2002 [Comm. 2] , Nizhny Novgorod ) - Soviet fencer , world champion (1961), medalist of the Olympic Games (1960) in team sword fencing competitions . Master of Sports of the USSR (1958). He was awarded the medal "For Labor Distinction" (1960).

Biography

Valentin Chernikov was born on April 1, 1937 in Yerevan . He started fencing in 1953 under the leadership of Heinrich Harutyunyan. He chose fencing with swords as his specialization. In 1958, he became the world champion among juniors and the winner of the first USSR Cup in the individual competition. From 1956 to 1963 he was a member of the national team of the USSR. In its composition became the winner of the Olympic Games in Rome and the world champion in team competitions. In 1964, he completed his sports career.

Later for many years he was engaged in coaching in the sports society “ Spartak ” and the School of Young Pentathletes in Yerevan. He participated in the preparation of the two-time world champion and Olympic medalist Ashot Karagyan and the USSR champion Armen Navasardyan.

In 1994 he moved to Nizhny Novgorod , where he spent the last years of his life. He died on January 5, 2002.
