Castle History
The area on which the castle was built has been of strategic importance since Roman times . The castle itself, part of the buildings of which dates back to the 13th century, witnessed Norman and Danish invasions. [one]
Belonged to the archbishops of Canterbury, in particular Thomas Becket . [one]
By the XIX century the castle fell into decay, at the beginning of the XX century the castle was reconstructed, several outbuildings were added to it.
During the second war, the castle housed an air defense observation post.
Current status
In the castle, in September 1978, Paul McCartney's band Wings recorded most of the tracks on the Back to the Egg album. [2]
Currently, the castle is privately owned, free access is limited, however, it holds corporate events and weddings on a commercial basis. [one]
