Algolization

Algolization ( pond ) - (from Latin algae - algae ) introduction into the pond of one species ( strain of this species) or several species (strains of these species) of algae.

Algolization of water bodies by introducing green algae - chlorella - is widely used throughout the world . The main goal of this method is to get rid of blue-green algae ( cyanobacteria ) that are toxic [ specify ] [1] and cause great harm not only to the reservoir as a whole, but also to the health of animals and humans .

In Russia, algolization first began to be applied in 1998 at the Penza Reservoir [2] , by introducing chlorella (Chlorella vulgaris IGF No. C-111) into the reservoir, but the experiment was not successful. In 2001, algolization was carried out according to a new, refined technique, and this time the attempt was a success. There was no flowering of blue-green algae , and they decided to continue algolization. To date, the Penza reservoir does not “bloom”.

At the XI Congress of the Hydrobiological Society at the Russian Academy of Sciences, it was decided to consider the so-called method of "algolization" of water bodies as false and causing significant damage to Russian hydrobiology. [3]

Use

  • Starting in 2005, in the Volgograd Region , the reservoirs of the Volga-Don Shipping Canal were algolized, which until then had constantly “bloomed” with blue-green algae . As a result of the introduction of the planktonic strain of chlorella , the "flowering" of water was prevented.
  • In 2007, some bays of Tsimlyansk and Volgograd reservoirs were algolized. The introduction of chlorella strains prevented the "bloom" of water in these bays.
  • In 2008, fish ponds of the Voronezh , Lipetsk , Tambov , Belgorod regions were algolized, in 2009, ponds of the Stavropol and Krasnodar Territories , Moscow , Leningrad and Rostov Regions .
  • From 2009 to 2011, work was carried out to clean the Matyr reservoir .
  • In 2010, work continued on these reservoirs and the Nizhny Tagil city pond (7.8 km 2 ) and the Beloyarsk reservoir (42.0 km 2 ) joined them.
  • In 2011, the number of large reservoirs was replenished with Lenevsky (23.0 km 2 ), as well as Chernoistochinsky (26.4 km 2 ) and Verkhne-Vyisky (6.0 km 2 ) drinking water reservoirs.

To date, more than 500 water bodies with a total area of more than 1000 km 2 have been rehabilitated. The number of fish farms that understand the need to use a suspension of chlorella in their farms has also increased. The total mirror area of water bodies algolized in 2012 amounted to more than 26,000 ha.

  • In 2012, work began with MGUP Mosvodokanal and GUP Vodokanal of St. Petersburg on drinking water bodies and wastewater. [four]

To date, the algolization of water bodies is applied throughout Russia.
