Biography

Pavel Fomich Popov was born on December 10 (23), 1906 in the village of Shalabolino, Minusinsk district, Yenisei province of the Russian Empire (now the village of Kuraginsky district of the Krasnoyarsk Territory of the Russian Federation ) into a wealthy peasant family. Russian After graduating from a seven-year school in his native village, Pavel Fomich went to Minusinsk . He entered the agricultural pedagogical college [1] , which he graduated in 1926. He worked as a school teacher in the villages of Sarala , Askiz and Ermakovskoye . In 1930, as a result of complete collectivization , the Popov family, which was one of the richest families in Shalabolino [2] , was dispossessed [3] . Pavel Fomich moved to Abakan , where his mother Akulina Dmitrievna was forced to leave with her younger sons Ivan and Alexei. He worked as a teacher in railway school No. 30. In 1935, P. F. Popov went to Krasnoyarsk . He entered the Krasnoyarsk Pedagogical Institute [4] , which he graduated with honors shortly before the start of World War II. By distribution, he was sent to work in school No. 11 [5] of the city ​​of Krasnoyarsk, where he taught mathematics and physics before being drafted.

On the fronts of World War II

P.F.Popov was called up to the ranks of the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army on February 17, 1942 by the Kaganovichi District Military Commissariat of the city of Krasnoyarsk. He graduated from junior lieutenant courses. At the end of 1942, junior lieutenant P.F. Popov was sent to the Tambov region , where the formation of the 69th mechanized brigade began , and was appointed commander of the rifle platoon of the 1st motorized rifle battalion. Until the fall of 1943, the brigade personnel were engaged in combat training in the Volga Military District . In the army P.F.Popov from September 10, 1943. In the second half of September, the 9th mechanized corps , which included the 69th mechanized brigade, arrived at the Voronezh Front and was subordinated to the 3rd Guards Tank Army . On September 18, 1943, the corps began to advance to the Dnieper . Junior lieutenant P.F. Popov distinguished himself during the Battle of the Dnieper during the crossing of the river and in the battles for the retention and expansion of the bridgehead on its right bank, called Bukrinsky .

On the night of September 21-22, 1943, a platoon of junior lieutenant P.F. Popov was the first in the battalion to cross the Dnieper near the village of Zarubintsy [6] of the Kanevsky district of the Cherkasy region of the Ukrainian SSR and, capturing the southwestern outskirts of the village, ensured unhindered transfer of his battalion to the occupied bridgehead. In the battles for expanding the bridgehead, Popov's platoon stormed the Lukovitsa settlement by storm, destroying up to 35 Wehrmacht soldiers. On September 26, 1943, in the battle for the village of Grigorovka, Pavel Fomich defeated the opposing company of the enemy with the forces of his platoon, destroying up to 50 enemy soldiers and officers. In further battles, junior lieutenant P.F. Popov stormed a number of strategically important heights in the area of ​​the village of Maly Bukrin . On September 29, 1943, he captured and held a height with a mark of 210.8, repelling three enemy counterattacks. A few days later, a platoon of Popov stormed the 214.9 high. Pavel Fomich personally led his fighters into battle and was the first to break into enemy trenches. In hand-to-hand combat, the Germans lost up to 100 soldiers and officers. In just 10 days of fighting on the bridgehead, the second lieutenant P.F. Popov personally destroyed about 50 Wehrmacht troops. For the successful crossing of the Dnieper River, the solidification of the bridgehead on the western bank of the Dnieper River and the courage and heroism shown by the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of November 17, 1943, Junior Lieutenant Popov Pavel Fomich was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union. Soon he was awarded another military rank - lieutenant.

Until the end of October 1943, P.F. Popov participated in battles at the Bukrinsky bridgehead. On October 26, 1943, units of the 9th Mechanized Corps were secretly transferred to the Lyutezhsky bridgehead , from where on November 3, 1943 they went on the offensive during the Kiev offensive operation . Pavel Fomich participated in the liberation of the capital of the Ukrainian SSR in Kiev , as part of his unit liberated the city of Korostyshev . During the Kiev defensive operation, Lieutenant Popov participated in repulsing German tank counterattacks east of Brusilov , then in the offensive of the 1st Ukrainian Front during the Zhytomyr-Berdychiv operation .

Doom

On March 4, 1944, at the very beginning of the Proskurovsky-Chernivtsi operation, when breaking through the enemy’s defense on the right (southern) bank of the Goryn River, Lieutenant P.F. Popov was seriously wounded. He was evacuated to the surgical field mobile hospital No. 5176, which is located in the city of Shepetovka , but on March 18, 1944 [7] [8] [9] Pavel Fomich died. He was buried in the mass grave of Soviet soldiers in the central square of Shepetovka .
