Story
In modern Los Angeles, the exorcist and medium John Constantine ( Keanu Reeves ) lives, able to see the otherworldly. In his youth, unable to withstand this gift, committed suicide , but was resuscitated. During the clinical death, John managed to visit Hell . After that, he began to struggle with demons penetrating the world, over the years of work becoming a legendary exorcist and protecting many people. Now, due to heavy smoking, John has a terminal stage of lung cancer ; he should die soon, after which, being a suicide, he will go to Hell. John suffers and is indignant, not understanding why he cannot get absolution, although half-blood angel Gabriel ( Tilda Swinton ) tries to explain that his motives are important to God, and he performed all his exploits out of selfishness, trying to earn forgiveness.
Angela ( Rachel Weisz ), a police detective, is trying to find the cause of the death of her twin sister Isabelle, who jumped from the roof of a psychiatric hospital, where she got because of visions of the other world. In childhood, both sisters saw what others did not see, but when Isabelle began to drag doctors and stuff with pills, Angela began to say that she did not see anything unusual; after some time the visions really left her. Now Angela suffers from guilty feelings and does not believe that her pious sister could have committed suicide. Angela comes to Konstantin, who first sends her away, but after the demons attack, she decides to help. He explains that God and Lucifer made a bet on which the souls of all people became the stakes. Angels and demons do not leave the bounds of heaven and hell; only half-breeds are allowed in the world that can push people to good or evil, but do not have the right to directly force them to act in a certain way. John briefly “looks” into Hell and receives evidence that Isabelle is really there. Wanting to make sure that John was right, Angela asks to send her for a short time to Hell. John fulfills the request, warning that this will return to the girl the abilities of the medium and allow him to see demons again; the demons themselves will also see her abilities and she will no longer be able to stay away.
John feels that the events of recent days are not accidental and something terrible is coming. Two of his old comrades at the cost of their lives suggest a clue: the son of Lucifer Mammon is going to break the truce and create his kingdom on Earth. To penetrate into this world, he needs a strong medium and divine help. The half-demon Balthazar ( Gavin Rossdale ), threatening to be sent to heaven, informs Konstantin that Mammon received the legendary Spear of Fate , which could open him a passage into the world of people. While Konstantin is investigating, Angela is being abducted. It turns out that she is the medium that Mammon needs; half-demons intend to carry out the ritual of “birth” of Mammon from the girl’s body. Together with his young assistant Chas ( Shia Labaff), Konstantin goes to the hospital, where they hold the kidnapped Angela. After destroying the demons, he interrupts the ritual and tries to expel Mammon from Angela, but Gabriel intervenes. Believing that the arrival of Hell on Earth will cleanse people and make them worthy of the love of God, Gabriel kills Chas and is about to complete the ritual, Spear of Destiny ravaged Angela’s stomach and released Mammon. Constantine opens his veins, knowing that Lucifer ( Peter Stormare ) will personally appear for his soul; this is what is happening. Constantine informs Lucifer of his son's plans; not wanting to break the contract with Heaven, he stops Gabriel, throws Mammon from Angela's body back to Hell and destroys Gabriel's wings with hellfire.
Lucifer is indebted to Konstantin: in payment, he offers to fulfill any desire. John asks Isabelle to let her soul go to Paradise, although for him this means immediate death and Hell. Lucifer, letting go of the girl, tries to take Constantine, but cannot do this: John, having sacrificed himself, received cleansing from sins. His soul begins to ascend towards the heavenly light. Enraged, Lucifer decides to leave John in the world - after all, this is the only chance that he will again commit enough sins to go to Hell. He revives Constantine, cures him of cancer and leaves. In the room are Angela, Constantine and Gabriel, who became a mortal woman. Gabriel is trying to provoke Konstantin to her murder in order to get to Paradise as a martyr, but John confines himself to slapping her face with the words: “This is pain. Get used to it. "
The last scene is a meeting of Konstantin and Angela on the roof of a skyscraper against the backdrop of the lights of the night city. Konstantin brings Angela the Spear of Destiny and asks to hide him in a safe place. At the end of the conversation, he climbs into the inner pocket with his usual movement, as if he wants to smoke, but takes out chewing gum.
In the scene after the credits, Konstantin comes to Chas’s grave. He says: “ Well done, baby, ” he puts his lighter on the tombstone and slowly leaves. Hearing the rustle of wings from behind, he turns around and sees Chas in white robes and with angel wings. Chas smiles, flaps his wings and disappears into the sky.
