Play career

After a good season in the Czechoslovak Championship and an impressive game for the national team at the World Youth Championship in 1991, Palffy was selected in the NHL Draft in the 2nd round under the 26th number of the New York Islanders. After spending two more years in Czechoslovakia, Zhigmund moved to North America. He spent most of the 1993/94 season at the IHL for the Salt Lake Golden Eagles , playing only five matches for the Islanders without scoring points. He spent the next season between the IHL and the NHL, playing for the Denver Grizzlies and the Islanders.

In the 1995/96 season, Palffy entrenched at the base of the club, gaining 87 (43 + 44) points in 81 matches by the end of the season. Already in the first game of the season against the “ Florida Panthers ” scored two goals, bringing victory to his team with a score of 2: 1. The next two seasons were also successful for Palffy, in which he scored 90 (48 + 42) and 87 (45 + 42) points, respectively. In the 1998/99 season , despite the fact that he played only 50 matches, he scored 50 (22 + 28) points. At the end of the season, the Islanders faced financial problems and on June 20 exchanged Palffy, striker Brian Smolinski , goalkeeper Marcel Cousino and the 1999 fourth round pick at the Los Angeles Kings pick for strikers Olli Jokinen and Josh Green , defender Matthew Biron and 1999 pick in the first round of the draft [1] .

At Kings, Palffy continued his strong performance in the NHL, often playing along with yet another Slovakian Joseph Stumpel and Canadian superstar Luke Robital . A shoulder injury began to limit Palffy's playing time. After the 2003/04 season , the Kings wanted to leave Palffy on the team, but in a telephone conversation with the owner of the Pittsburgh Penguins, Mario Lemieux Palffy agreed to sign the contract with the Penguins. The contract was signed shortly after the 2004/05 lockout for three years, in the amount of $ 13.5 million.

After 42 games in the 2005/06 season, Puffy announced his retirement from hockey. On January 18, 2006, then-Penguin general manager Craig Patrick said that the cause of retirement, according to Sigmund himself, was a long-standing shoulder injury. As a result, in 12 NHL seasons, Palffy scored 713 (329 + 384) points in 684 games.

In the international arena, Palffy played for the national teams of Czechoslovakia and Slovakia . 2002 World Champion. He also won a bronze medal at the 2003 World Cup .

In the summer of 2007, he announced his return and signed a contract with the club HK 36 from his hometown Skalitsa. In the first season he became the top scorer of the Slovak Extra League, scoring 76 (30 + 46) points in 47 matches. He also resumed playing for the national team. After the season 2012/2013 ended his career [2] .

In total, during his career in the national team and clubs he played 1359 games, scored 763 goals.
