Biography
Initially, he studied with the abbot Valard ( fr: Joseph Valart ) of ancient languages, then he was brought up in Paris with the famous geographer F. Preto ( fr: Philippe de Prétot ) and thoroughly became acquainted with many modern languages. His knowledge of linguistics drew his attention to the comparative structure of different dialects, and he published the best grammar of his time, “Principes généraux de langue française” (1754), which revolutionized the teaching of the French language. His French grammar has been approved by the university and accepted at all colleges . De Vailly was a supporter of the new spelling of Dumars ( fr: César Chesneau Dumarsais ), and wanted the French letters to express the pronunciation of words directly; but not everyone joined his method.
He was invited to collaborate at the Institute of France immediately after its creation in 1795; became one of the active employees of the dictionary of the French Academy (1798) and compiled its abridged edition (1801), improved and continued by his son Etienne De Vailly and grandson Alfred De Vailly, who are known for their translations of classical poets and works on French lexicography.
During the revolution, he avoided street events and died in Paris on April 7, 1801.
