In 1818, Karol Lipinsky took a trip to Italy for the sole purpose of hearing the play of the great Niccolo Paganini .
“A certain Lipinsky came from Poland just to listen to my game. This man adores me and follows me everywhere. He decided not to return to his homeland until he worked for several years in my genre, and did not want to listen to any other violin professor ” [4] .
Friendship soon developed between the two artists. They often met, played duets for violins, and when the repertoire was exhausted, they switched to improvisations. Lipinsky gave a concert in Piacenza , in which he performed a duet for violins with Paganini. In this joint speech there was no shadow of rivalry, on the contrary, Paganini sought to contribute to the success of his colleague.
In 1829, Lipinsky and Paganini met again in Warsaw , where Karol served as accompanist and soloist of the court orchestra. Lipinsky gave his concert, for which there was a review praising him and defaming Paganini. In response, other reviewers extolled Paganini and defamed Lipinsky. To protect himself from suspicions that he was interested in attacks on Paganini, Lipinsky appeared in print with his own article. Paganini, who was not interested in this polemic, lost his temper for Lipinsky. When asked who, in his opinion, the world's first violinist, he replied: “I don’t know who is the first. But the second one is undoubtedly Lipinsky. ”
Robert Schumann dedicated the Carnival piano cycle to Lipinsky.
