Biography
Nikolai Popov was born on November 20 ( December 3, in a new style) in the village of Tambovka (now the Bolsheglushitsky district of the Samara Region ) into a peasant family. He received his primary education, at the age of twelve he went to work in the Penza province . In 1925 he became a worker in the oil fields in Baku , later he began to work in the transport office of the Azneftecomplex trust. In September 1941, Popov was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army and sent to the front of the Great Patriotic War. He participated in the battles in the Donbass, the battle for the Caucasus , the liberation of the Ukrainian and Byelorussian SSR. By January 1945, Junior Lieutenant Nikolai Popov was the party organizer of the battalion of the 340th Infantry Regiment of the 46th Infantry Division of the 2nd Shock Army of the 2nd Belorussian Front . Distinguished during the liberation of Poland [1] .
On January 26, 1945, Popov, being in the battle formations of a rifle company, was one of the first to regiment crossed the Vistula River to the west of the city of Elbing and took part in repelling a large number of German counterattacks. He raised a group of fighters to the attack, then with two grenades knocked out an enemy tank. He died in this battle [1] .
By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of June 29, 1945, junior lieutenant Nikolai Popov was posthumously awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union . He was also awarded the Order of Lenin and a number of medals [1] .
A street in Baku was named in honor of Popov [1] .
