Biography

Nikolai Gorbatenko was born on December 12, 1923 in the village of Uspenka (now the Tatarsky District of the Novosibirsk Region ) into a working family.

Received an incomplete secondary education.

In 1942, Gorbatenko was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army . In the same year, he graduated from the Omsk Military Infantry School and was sent to the front of the Great Patriotic War . By July 1944, Senior Lieutenant Nikolai Gorbatenko commanded a platoon of the 1234th Infantry Regiment of the 370th Infantry Division of the 69th Army of the 1st Belorussian Front . Distinguished during the liberation of Poland [1] .

On July 31, 1944, Gorbatenko was one of the first to cross the Vistula River near the city of Pulawy with improvised means and took an active part in repelling four enemy counterattacks. When the company commander fell out of service, Gorbatenko replaced him with himself and continued to carry out the combat mission [1] .

By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated March 24, 1945, Senior Lieutenant Nikolai Gorbatenko was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the awarding of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal [1] .

After the war, Gorbatenko continued to serve in the Soviet Army . In 1947 he graduated from advanced training courses for officers. In 1956, with the rank of major, he was transferred to the reserve. He lived in Alma-Ata . He died on October 21, 1981 [1] .
