Biography

The miracle is fiery , in the chapel of St. Genevieve , the church of St. Roja, Paris , 1773.

Born in Paris in 1726; at the age of 12 he discovered such obvious artistic abilities that his father identified him as a student of S. Vanló . In 1746, Doyen received a Roman prize and, traveling to Italy, studied works there mainly A. Carracci , Lanfranco , Pietro da Cortona and Solimena .

Upon his return to Paris in 1755, at first he did not find sufficient recognition of his talent in a society biased towards cunning and empty prettiness in art; but the painting “Death of Virginia” exhibited by him in the salon brought him fame.

For another picture, "Jupiter and Hebe", in 1759, the Paris Academy of Painting accepted him into its membership. In 1767, Mr .. finished the best of his works - "Miracle des Ardens" ( St. Genevieve prayer stops the raging plague in Paris; the Church of St. Roch in Paris). In 1767, Doyen received a professorship.

After the death of Vanló, he was commissioned to complete the painting of the chapel of St. Gregory in the church of the house of the disabled .

The revolutionary unrest in France prompted Doyen to accept the proposal of the Russian Empress Catherine II , who had long invited him to St. Petersburg. Arriving there in 1791, he settled in one of the palace buildings, began to receive 1,200 rubles. salary per year and generally enjoyed great favor with the great sovereign and, at her death, with Emperor Paul I. On their behalf, he did a lot of work, mostly decorative, and painted, among other things, two ceilings for the St. George Hall in the Winter Palace ( burned down in 1837 ), a ceiling in the building of the Old Hermitage (“Virtues represent the Russian youth of Minerva”) and ceiling in the bedchamber of Emperor Paul I.

In 1798, Doyen was identified as a professor at the Imperial Academy of Arts and, fulfilling this position until 1801, influenced the education of many Russian painters. He died in St. Petersburg in 1806.
