Writing History

The text that compiled this article was written in 1980 - 1983. for the historical epic " Red Wheel " and consisted of four review chapters, completing the corresponding volumes of "March of the Seventeenth" [4] . Subsequently, the author decided to “separate the clear conclusions from the artistic fabric” and publish them someday sometime [3] . The main content of the article is connected with the following questions: “the responsibility of the monarch for the fate of the people entrusted to him, the criterion for assessing the morality and immorality of the highest authority, the role of Russian liberals in the collapse of the Empire” and others [3] .

Although for forty years I was preparing to write about the revolution in Russia, in 1976 it was forty years from the first concept of the book — I just now, in Hoover — in a large volume, in an unexpected width — received, felt, swallowed the material. Only now did he recognize it abundantly - and, as he recognized it, there was a mental turn, which I did not expect. <...>

I was shocked. It’s not that until now I was a zealous supporter of the February Revolution or a fan of its ideas, a secular humanist , but still for forty years I dragged on the universally accepted idea that in February Russia achieved the freedom that has been desired by generations, and everything was justly rejoiced, and gently waved this freedom, however, alas, alas - only eight months, because of the Bolshevik villains alone, who drowned all freedom in blood and turned the country to death. And now, with astonishment and disgust, I was discovering with what meanness, meanness, hypocrisy, slavish unity, suppression of non-thinkers the first, most “great” days of this supposedly luminiferous revolution were marked, and with what muddy newspaper slop it was washed every day. The inevitable loss of Russia-zazalila already in the early days of March. The interim government turned out to be even more insignificant than the Bolsheviks portrayed it [5] .
