Family

William Amherst was born into the family of lawyers Jeffrey Amherst and Elizabeth Curril. [1] The brothers of William Amherst also served the British crown - Lord Jeffrey Amherst, 1st Baron Amherst and Admiral John Amherst . [2] Married Elizabeth Patterson, one of their children, William Amherst, received the title of Earl and became Governor General of India.

The Seven Years War

William Amherst joined the first infantry guards regiment in 1755 with the rank of ensign. [3] In the rank of lieutenant colonel Amherst played an important role in the final stage of the Seven Years War. In 1762, a British expeditionary force landed in Newfoundland with the goal of recapturing Fort St. Johns previously captured by the French. The British attack came as a surprise, they easily defeated the French at the Battle of Signal Hill , [3] the French who took refuge in the fort on the order of their commander Chevalier de Ternet surrendered three days later.

Subsequent Career

In 1766, Amherst became a member of parliament from the city of Heath , in 1768 from the city of Launceston . [4] [5]

In 1769, he bought land in Ryde on the Isle of Wight and built a house there, he named his estate in honor of St. John in commemoration of his victory at Newfoundland. The surroundings near his estate are still known by this name. [6]

In 1778, he was appointed Adjutant General. [7] In 1779 he received the rank of Lieutenant General corresponding to the new position. [3]
