Biography
Grigory Schneerson was born in Yeniseisk in the family of a revolutionary teacher who served political exile in Eastern Siberia [2] . In 1915 he entered the Petrograd Conservatory , where, until 1918, he studied piano at N. N. Pozdnyakovskaya. In 1919 in Moscow he took piano lessons from N. K. Medtner and K. N. Igumnov . As an accompanist, Schneerson worked in various theatrical groups: in the “ Blue Blouse ”, the Proletkult Theater , the Satire Theater , and later in the 2nd Belarussian Drama Theater in Vitebsk .
In the 20s, Schneerson was an employee of the Music Bureau of the International Association of Revolutionary Theaters, and from 1932 - responsible secretary of the MORT music section; since 1936, secretary of the Foreign Bureau of the Union of Composers of the USSR , music consultant of the All-Union Society for Cultural Relations with Foreign Countries (VOKS), in 1942-1948, head of the VOKS music department. In the first months of World War II, Schneerson as a conductor was headed by one of the divisional ensembles [2] . In the course of the so-called " fight against cosmopolitanism " he was suspended from work in the VOKS and from 1948 to 1960 headed the foreign department of the magazine "Soviet music" [2] .
Creativity
Gregory Schneerson is the author of two dozen monographs and hundreds of articles; according to contemporaries, he was an excellent propagandist of both Soviet music abroad and foreign music in the USSR; He owns the book “French Music of the 20th Century”, “Portraits of American Composers”, as well as numerous articles that in 1974 are included in the collection “Articles on Modern Foreign Music. Essays. Memories". On the pages of newspapers and magazines Schneerson, for the first time, introduced Soviet readers to the new compositions of H. Eisler , B. Britten , O. Messiaen , H. V. Hentze, and other contemporary composers [2] ; He was a member of the Italian Academy of Sciences, Literature and Art, a corresponding member of the Academy of Arts of the GDR , a laureate of the prize of the French Academy of Fine Arts [2] .
Personally familiar with many prominent musicians, Schneerson collected a unique archive, which is currently stored in the State Central Museum of Musical Culture. M. I. Glinka [3]
