Biography

The elder brother (and co-author of several works) of the writer Karel čapek , illustrator of his works. It is believed that it was Josef who invented the word “robot” (from the Czech robota - “penal servitude”), and Karel introduced him to literature.

Born March 23, 1887 in the mountainous Czech town of Hronov . He studied in primary and secondary schools, then studied in Germany for two years at the school of weavers. After graduation, in 1903, he worked at the Úpická FM Oberlender factory for a year.

In the fall of 1904, Josef moved to Prague and entered the Academy of Arts.

Together with his brother Karel spent several years in Paris . In 1910–11 he lived in Paris, where he became friends with G. Apolliner and the Cubists and attended the Kolarossi Academy .

In the works of Josef traced the influence of cubism in combination with elements of folklore stylistics. His first exhibition was held in Prague in 1912 .

In the 1930s, Capek created a number of works of social and political orientation, protesting against war and fascism . Immediately after the start of the Second World War , on September 9, 1939, Joseph was arrested by the Nazis. After several years spent in various concentration camps, the artist died of typhoid between April 13 and 15, 1945 in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp .

The remains of his body were never found, so the court declared him dead on April 30, 1947 [4] .

The names of the Chapek brothers are now the streets in Prague and many other cities.
