Voluntarily Forced

“Voluntary-compulsory” ( Swede. De ofrivilliga ) - a drama by the Swedish director Ruben Estlund, released in 2008. Ruben himself describes it as a "tragic comedy or comic tragedy ." The film consists of five stories related to the group behavior of people [1] . The film is distinguished by long scenes shot without editing glues. This is a reference to the beginning of Estlund's film career, when he was the director of films about skiers, where a frame change meant failure. The longest scene lasts 7 minutes [2] .

Creation History

Work on the script began in the fall of 2004, when Ruben and Eric began recording short scenes taken from or inspired by their lives [4] .

Filming began in the summer of 2006. Most scenes were shot in a day and required about 20 takes, but some scenes required much more [5] . The stories were shot one at a time, so many actors first met only at the premiere [6] .

The film premiered on May 19, 2008 at the Cannes Film Festival in the program Special Look [7] .
