Creation History
The history of the creation of "Soul Bossa Nova" dates back to the 1950s, when Quincy Jones took part in the tour of the ensemble Dizzy Gillespie [1] . Arriving in Buenos Aires , Jones and Gillespie met there a young pianist Lalo Schifrin , who introduced them to the new style of “new wave” - “new wave”, which in Portuguese sounded like “Bosanova” [2] . The next city of the South American tour was Rio de Janeiro . On the Copacabana beach, Quincy Jones heard new Latin American rhythms live, and later at the Gloria Hotel he watched Astrud Gilberto , Antonio Carlos Jobin and João Gilberto perform the bebop . The composition that most influenced the musical structure of “Soul Bossa Nova” was Chobin's “Desafinado”.
After some time, Quincy Jones and a group of his familiar musicians (including Sergio Mendez and Gilberto Gil ) played a concert at Carnegie Hall , consisting entirely of plays from the Bosanova genre. Soon after, Jones recorded and released Soul Bossa Nova. As he later admitted in an interview with Billboard magazine, “it took him only 20 minutes to write and record a song.” [3] [4] . In addition to Jobin, the influence of Charles Mingus and Lalo Shifrin was traced in the composition. The memorable flute solo was performed by Rahsan Roland Kirk - a close friend of Jones. In addition to piccolo , flutes, oboes , clarinets , saxophones , trombones and trumpets , bongos , snare drums , cymbals , wood blocks , tom-toms , cowbell , piano and double bass were involved in recording.
In 2007, Quincy Jones, along with rapper Ludacris and a cappella group Naturally 7, released an updated version of Soul Bossa Nova, which was included in the Q album Soul Bossa Nostra [4] .
