The basketball tournament of the 1st Summer Games of the Peoples of the USSR in 1956 was held from August 6 to August 15, 1956 in Moscow .
Competitions also had the status of the USSR Basketball Championship .
The tournament was attended by 16 national teams from all the Union republics , as well as national teams of Moscow and Leningrad .
The competitions were held in two stages - preliminary and final.

Preliminary Phase
18 teams were divided into three subgroups, within which they held a tournament in a circular system . Two group winners entered the final tournament for the 1-6th places, the teams that took the third and fourth place - in the tournament for the 7th-12th places, the rest - in the tournament for the 13th-18th places.
